Pet parasite prevention
Fleas, ticks, rickettsiosis, and heartworm. In Ensenada the climate keeps these parasites active almost all year. This is the complete guide to protect your pet.
Why is prevention critical in coastal areas?
Ensenada has a mild climate year-round. Unlike colder zones where winter reduces flea and mosquito activity, in Baja California these parasites are practically nonstop. This means your pet is exposed 12 months a year to:
- Fleas: cause scratching, allergic dermatitis, anemia in puppies, and transmit tapeworms.
- Ticks: transmit rickettsiosis (zoonotic) and canine ehrlichiosis (can be fatal).
- Mosquitoes: heartworm vectors, fatal parasite living in pulmonary arteries.
- Intestinal parasites: worms, hookworms, giardia. Covered with periodic internal deworming.
The good news: preventing all of this costs less than treating a single severe infestation, and most modern products are highly safe with monthly or 3-month dosing.

This is a typical schedule we recommend for a healthy adult dog in Ensenada. Your vet personalizes by weight, age, breed, and lifestyle:
- Monthly: external antiparasitic (oral or pipette) covering fleas, ticks, and in some cases, heartworm. Examples: NexGard, Bravecto (every 3 months), Revolution.
- Monthly: heartworm preventive if external does not include it. Examples: Heartgard Plus, Interceptor.
- Every 3 months: internal deworming for intestinal parasites (worms, tapeworms).
- Annually: heartworm snap test + general veterinary review.
- Daily: quick manual inspection after outdoor outings, park, or beach.
For cats the schedule is similar but with feline-specific products. Some dog products are toxic to cats (especially permethrin), so never apply canine product to felines.
Common myths about antiparasitics
"Natural products (garlic, vinegar, essential oils) are equally effective"
False. No evidence of efficacy and several are toxic (garlic causes anemia in dogs and cats, essential oils are hepatotoxic in cats). Use proven veterinary products.
"My pet does not go to the countryside, doesn\'t need antiparasitic"
False. Fleas can enter the home on shoes or clothes. Mosquitoes enter through windows. Many strictly indoor pets have developed infestations or been infected with Dirofilaria.
"If I buy at a human pharmacy it is cheaper"
Human antiparasitic products are NOT interchangeable with veterinary ones. Different doses, different active ingredients, risk of fatal overdose in sensitive breeds (MDR1). Only use veterinary products under prescription.
"If I do not see fleas or ticks, I do not need prevention"
Adult fleas are only 5% of the total population: 95% are eggs, larvae, and pupae hidden in the environment. By the time you see adult fleas, infestation is already established. Prevention avoids reaching that point.
"The cheap supermarket flea collar is the same as branded ones"
Generic collars usually have pyrethroids at very low concentrations or irritants. Seresto (Bayer) is the only collar clinically backed with proven 8-month efficacy. The price difference is real because components are different.

Frequently asked questions about pet parasites
Why are there so many parasites in Ensenada year-round?
Baja California's mild coastal climate does not have the cold winter pause that exists elsewhere. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes reproduce actively almost all year, so antiparasitic prevention cannot be seasonal as in colder climates.
Do I need to give prevention 12 months a year?
In Ensenada, yes. Mosquito and flea season does not completely stop in winter. A single pregnant flea at home can start a new infestation, and a few months without Dirofilaria prevention is enough for the parasite to establish. Continuous prevention is simpler, safer, and cheaper than treating.
Is there a product that covers all parasites?
Combined products exist that cover several at once. Revolution covers Dirofilaria + fleas + mites. Bravecto Plus (cats) covers Dirofilaria + fleas + ticks + intestinal parasites. For dogs, Heartgard Plus + Bravecto/NexGard together cover the full spectrum. Your vet helps choose the simplest schedule.
Do fleas and ticks also attack humans?
They can bite humans but do not complete their cycle in people. However, they transmit zoonotic diseases: ticks can transmit rickettsiosis and ehrlichiosis to humans. Fleas transmit tapeworm (rarely) and bartonella (cat scratch disease). That is why preventing in pets also protects your family.
How is heartworm transmitted?
Only by mosquitoes. A mosquito bites an infected dog, absorbs larvae, develops them 10-14 days inside, then transmits to a healthy dog by biting. NOT directly contagious dog-to-dog. But in areas with many mosquitoes like Ensenada, transmission via mosquito is very possible.
Does my cat need antiparasitic prevention?
Yes, especially if it has outdoor access or lives with dogs. Fleas affect cats as well as dogs. Ticks are less common in cats but occur. Dirofilaria in cats is rare but potentially fatal without possible adulticide treatment. Your vet will guide on cat-specific products.
